Overview
Skiing in Norway
Norway offers a different kind of ski holiday to the Alps, with quieter mountains, snow-covered forests and resorts that feel closely connected to the surrounding landscape. The skiing ranges from family-friendly pistes and beautifully groomed cruising to World Cup terrain, freeride areas and extensive cross-country networks. Many of the country’s larger resorts are also straightforward to reach by train, bus or air.
When to Ski in Norway
The main Norwegian ski season generally runs from December through to April, although some resorts open in late November when conditions allow. January and February usually bring colder, more wintry conditions, while March offers longer daylight hours and excellent skiing without losing the distinctly Scandinavian feel. For 2026/27, Trysil is scheduled from early December to mid-April, while Kvitfjell normally aims to begin its season in November.
Travel Insurance and Winter Sports Cover
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for a ski holiday in Norway. Make sure your policy specifically covers skiing or snowboarding, medical treatment, mountain rescue and any off-piste activities you intend to take part in. UK travellers can use a GHIC or eligible EHIC for medically necessary state healthcare in Norway, but this does not replace travel insurance or cover costs such as repatriation or mountain rescue.
