Skiing in France

When to Ski in France

The main French ski season typically runs from December through to April, with high-altitude resorts often offering the most reliable conditions at either end of the season.

Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays are among the most sought-after periods, bringing a lively atmosphere to the mountains. For quieter pistes and a more relaxed experience, January and March can be particularly rewarding, combining excellent skiing with fewer peak-season crowds.

Travel Insurance and Winter Sports Cover

Travel insurance is not mandatory for a ski holiday in France, but comprehensive cover is strongly recommended. Standard travel insurance does not always include skiing and snowboarding, so look specifically for a policy with appropriate winter sports cover.

Depending on your plans, it is worth checking that your policy covers mountain rescue and medical expenses, piste closure, ski equipment and the activities you intend to take part in.
