Overview
Skiing in Spain
Spain offers far more skiing than its sunny reputation suggests, with major resorts stretching from the Pyrenees in the north to the mountains of Andalucía. Baqueira Beret combines extensive terrain with the character of the Val d’Aran, Formigal-Panticosa delivers some of the biggest mileage in the Spanish Pyrenees, while Sierra Nevada offers high-altitude skiing within easy reach of Granada. Add plenty of winter sunshine, excellent food and a noticeably different atmosphere from the traditional Alps, and Spain makes a very convincing alternative.
When to Ski in Spain
The main season generally runs from December through to April, although altitude and location make a difference. The higher terrain of Sierra Nevada can remain skiable well into spring, while January through March is usually the heart of the season across the Pyrenees.
Travel Insurance and Winter Sports Cover
Comprehensive travel insurance with appropriate winter sports cover is strongly recommended. UK travellers can use a GHIC or eligible EHIC for medically necessary state healthcare in Spain, but this does not replace travel insurance or cover costs such as repatriation and some private treatment
