Skiing in Austria

Austria combines world-class skiing with some of the Alps’ most atmospheric mountain towns. From high-altitude resorts such as Sölden to the extensive terrain around Mayrhofen and the historic streets of Kitzbühel, Austrian ski holidays are known for varied pistes, traditional villages, mountain restaurants and a famously lively après-ski scene.

When to Ski in Austria

The main Austrian ski season generally runs from December through to April, with higher resorts and glacier areas often offering reliable skiing earlier and later in the season. Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays are among the busiest periods, particularly in the larger resorts. January can be excellent for colder snow and quieter slopes, while March often brings longer days, sunnier conditions and some of the best opportunities for relaxed spring skiing.

Travel Insurance and Winter Sports Cover

Travel insurance is not mandatory for a ski holiday in Austria, but comprehensive cover is strongly recommended. Standard policies do not always include skiing and snowboarding, so make sure your policy specifically includes suitable winter sports cover. Depending on your plans, it is worth checking that your policy covers mountain rescue and medical expenses, ski equipment, piste closure and any off-piste or specialist activities you intend to take part in.
